MIA’S GUIDE TO

Del Mar

WELCOME HOME TO Del Mar

You’ll find that most of Southern California lives up to the “you’ve got to see it to believe it” hype, but Del Mar is different. Here, experiencing is believing. There’s a kind of charm here that cannot be captured in a post or picture. No lens can make sense of its nostalgia; its casual sort of sophistication. There’s a kind of a secret excitement you feel here — like you’re eavesdropping on a conversation from a half century ago between two Hollywood stars as they sip martinis, trade stories and take in the setting sun. Welcome to Del Mar.

THE LAYOUT

Del Mar may only take up 2.1 square miles of the coast just south of Solana Beach, but this quaint seaside village has quite a lot to offer. Its beaches are famously tranquil and the views from atop the bluffs are just as spectacular. In fact, this scenic serenity lured many a movie star during Hollywood’s Golden era. The likes of Eva Gardner, Rita Hayworth, Red Skelton and Bing Crosby frequently escaped to the peaceful ambiance of Del Mar. In fact, Bing himself was a founding member of the famed Del Mar Racetrack, which to this day brings people from far and wide to fashionably appreciate thoroughbred horse racing. As one of the smallest beach communities in San Diego, there is limited land to build, making the real estate affluent and sell for a premium. But Del Mar is definitely multi-faceted; you can find Spanish, modern and custom style homes nestled amongst the beaches, golf courses, vistas and sandstone canyons.

THE LIVING SITUATION

Del Mar has a small-town atmosphere with all the California amenities. You’ll find unique, independent shops in the historic village, award winning cuisine at renowned restaurants and all-inclusive opulence at luxury beach style resorts. All this is easily accessible by foot or bike. The beaches speak for themselves, with the kind of views no filter could improve. Even your fur babies can live their best lives at the ever-popular North Beach (also known as Dog Beach.) As for your best life, Del Mar has events to keep you living it all year round. From “Summer Twilight Concerts” to “Taste of Del Mar” in September and “Santa by the Sea” during the holidays — there is always something to be festive about. Plus, Del Mar is also home to the San Diego Fairgrounds, which hosts the San Diego County Fair and other large concert events.

MIA’S MUSTS

Here are a few things I recommend to make your Del Mar experience even more memorable.
Must Eat
Beeside Balcony. Come for the view. Come back again and again for the food. This hidden gem is worth all the buzz.
Must Hike
Crest Canyon. Hang out with the hummingbirds amongst the Torrey Pines, as you try to comprehend the views you’re taking in. Incredible from the get-go.
Must Brunch
Jake’s Del Mar. The Hula Pie. The Hula Pie. The Hula Pie. Did I mention the Hula Pie?
Must Volleyball
San Diego Beach Volleyball Club. It’s literally all fun and games out here. Improve your game and your tan, all at once.
Must Picnic
Powerhouse Park & Beach. It has all the makings for an amazing picnic: grass, paths, beach, views, playground. And if you forget to bring the picnic food, you can hit up Jakes, Poseidon or the Del Mar Snack Shack.
Must Sunset and Cocktail
Poseidon on the Beach. A serene view and strong cocktail make for the perfect end to the day, and an epic entrance to the evening.

Founded in 1959, Del Mar is Spanish for “of the sea,” which makes sense because it’s such a beautiful beach community.
Del Mar is the smallest incorporated city in San Diego County, so you can definitely expect a much more leisurely and laidback lifestyle here. Its average school ranking is amazing, with a 9 out of 10.
Condo prices start at $455 000, while detached homes start around $1.4 million dollars. Here’s the fun. If you love Gimlet, I will likely see you in this dress at noon on a Tuesday at the famed Del Mar racetrack. You don’t really need a car here. If you own a piece of Del Mar real estate, it’s safe to say you’ll be hiking, biking or surfing everywhere. My must, if you love a good hike, check out Crest Canyon. Hang out with the hummingbirds amongst the Torrey Pines as you try to comprehend the breathtaking views of Del Mar.

Del Mar Resources

Can I get a list of Del Mar homes for sale?
Yes you can! Give me a call!
What does Del Mar Mean?
Well to me, Del Mar means sunsets over white sand beaches, excitement at the Del Mar Racetrack and summer concerts at the San Diego County Fairgrounds. But the actual translation of “Del Mar” from Spanish is “of the sea,” which is also true!
Where is Del Mar Beach?
Del Mar is lucky enough to have a few beaches to enjoy. You can choose from Powerhouse Beach, Seagrove Park, Torrey Pines State Beach, Del Mar City Beach and the ever-popular Del Mar Dog Beach. To get to them from the 5, you’ll exit Del Mar Heights Road or Via De La Valle and head west. Del Mar Heights leads to the south end of Del Mar at Pacific Coast Hwy and 4th Street; Via De La Valle meets Pacific Coast Hwy on the extreme north end of Del Mar at the Rivermouth. And to find the main beach area, follow the Coast Highway to the intersection of 15th Street and Coast Boulevard, midway between these two points.
How far is Del Mar from San Diego?
It will cost you about 24 minutes to get from Downtown to Del Mar, but I think the views, food, shopping and activities available make it well worth the drive. (about 22 miles)

What does the average home cost in Del Mar?
The average home in Del Mar has a lot to offer, and you’ll probably have to offer a bit more to own here. Most recently, the average home cost was between $1.3-$1.4M.
What is the mix of Del Mar homes to apartments?
As one of the smallest beach communities in San Diego, there is limited land to build, making the real estate affluent and sell for a premium. But Del Mar is definitely multi-faceted; you can find Spanish, modern and custom style homes nestled amongst the beaches, golf courses, vistas and sandstone canyons. Apartments are generally more scarce here, but you can certainly find some near the beaches!
What is the best restaurant in Del Mar?
That is a wonderfully hard question. I’m not sure of the answer, because I have a number of favorites — so I’m going to list them here so you taste for yourself! My top faves are Pacifica Del Mar, Jakes Del Mar, Brigantine Del Mar and Beeside Balcony.
